Vous connaissez maintenant Marian Anderson qui a chanté de magnifiques negro-spirituals. Mais il y a aussi Paul Robeson.
Paul Robeson est né à Princeton (New Jersey) le 9 avril 1898. Il exerça le droit à New York mais en but à un racisme quotidien, il abandonnera son métier pour se consacrer à ses premiers amours : la comédie, le cinéma (onze film à son actif) et le chant.
Il se produira dans le monde entier New York, Vienne, Prague, Budapest, l'Allemagne, Paris, la Hollande, Londres, Moscou, et Nairobi (il parlait 15 langues!).
Il eut le « tort » d’être noir et communiste et fut inscrit sur la «black list » du sénateur Mac Carthy, partisan de la ségrégation raciale. Paul Robeson a bravé l'interdit en dénonçant, bien avant les sermons du jeune pasteur King, les exactions racistes des autorités américaines au cœur du 20ème siècle. Malgré les obstacles, les intimidations, il consacrera toute son existence à la défense des opprimés où qu'ils soient sur la planète. Véritable ambassadeur de la culture noire, ses nombreux voyages, notamment en URSS, furent souvent mal perçus. Expulsé des Etats-Unis en 1950, il n’y reviendra que 8 ans plus tard.
Il fut le premier noir à interpréter le rôle d’Othello (opéra de Verdi). Il se spécialisera dans le chant religieux et les negro-spirituals.
